Members from the Random Acts of Kindness Club at Merrimack High School attended an International PeaceJam conference in Los Angeles in September 2008. In attendance, they met several students from all over the world, from Argentina, South Africa, Tibet, Thailand, etc. and heard these students' stories.

One young woman in particular caught Merrimack High School students' attention, Charm Tong. She told her story of how she opened up a school for Burmese students to learn leadership skills to promote peace and justice for all people so that they may work within their communities and their community organizations on the Thai-Burma border and in Burma.

Students decided to help Tong by holding a benefit concert where all of the proceeds would go to her school. The concert was held March 27 and the group rose a little more than $1,000.

The bands donated their time for this benefit. They were: Zach Guerra, Lima Research Society, Math the Band and Discokrack.

Burmese human rights activist, Tong, of the Shan Women's Action Network, set up the School for Shan State Nationalities Youth in 2001. More information may be found at www.sssny.org.
