Burma's courageous monk-leader U Gambira, who led peaceful protests during 2007, currently languishes in Hkamti Prison. Last November he was handed down a sentence of 68 years by a special court on charges of "threatening the stability of the state".
Gambira's "crime" was to convince follow monks to boycott alms offered by the security personnel, who brutally suppressed non-violent demonstrations on September 5, 2007, in Pakokkuk Township. The protest escalated into the massive monk-led protests now collectively known as Burma's Saffron Revolution.
Last week Gambira’s brother, brother-in-law and four cousins were each sentenced to five years' imprisonment, charged with offences under Immigration Act 13/1. There is no doubt that the junta fabricated the charges against his innocent family members in yet another act of reprisal against the Venerable U Gambira for daring to stand against Burma's tyrannical generals.
